Philomena – The life & times of small town America in the 1900’s

Town of Philomena

I was wandering the grid, looking for a home to show you this month. I happened across the town of Philomena by chance, and decided to look around. There was an old fashioned trolley bus trundling by so I hopped on and went for a ride. As we left the shopping area and entered the residential side, I was enchanted. The homes are varied and cater to all budgets and all fit into the Edwardian / Victorian period. As I’m such a pauper I got off the trolley by a  small’ish looking home (above) and was pleased to find that it was very affordable indeed! The home was unfurnished (which I prefer) and had a plentiful prim allowance to decorate. Naturally the region is “period” but role play is very optional, I think its lovely to have the opportunity to dress up in period costume – so I have – but again it is optional. As you can see , at the moment the region is decorated with Autumnal plants and foliage, at the recent town meeting a new weather system was exhibited, and it looked fantastic – snow for Christmas perhaps! That is essentially the huge difference that I’ve found renting a home in Philomena, it’s a “community” and boy oh boy are those rare to find these days in Second Life! Most Saturdays there is  social meeting, plus various other events such as a yardsale for us all to sell our spare gacha buys.  Its going to be a busy Winter too ! Lots planned for the townfolk, I’m really looking forward to the decorate your home contest.

Philomenaville

If you’re unsure how to furnish your residence, don’t fret. There is a large shopping area in town with everything you could possibly need for your home. Plus period clothing – of which I have bought rather a lot of!

Philomenaville Shops

It’s so relaxing just walking around the town, window shopping and hopping on and off the trolley bus. Apparently Philomena also has a railway station, which I am yet to visit. There is a new system in place so that you can travel between Historic & period regions. Each region has its own “visa” that you wear to use the facilities – it sounds marvellous and I will be having a go later this week time permitting.

Philomena outfit by Umikoh $50L many colour options - mesh!

Couldn’t resist showing off one of my bargain buys, I found this on the market place by Umikoh – just $50L for the set plus seven basic colours to play with. All mesh and really nicely made, I’ve found it doesn’t have to cost a great deal to get “into character” and its so much fun looking for clothing of that era.

Philomena Mayor

This is The Mayor of Philomena, Mr Blake Panache, and this photo was taken at last night Town meeting – it drew quite a crowd! Im not sure why the Mayor has spider webs on his hands – maybe he has a day job of uhm – Spider Man?! Oh the intrigue . At the moment the rentals are not centralised in any way, so its simply a matter of walking or bus’ing around till you spot something you like – just like I did. Have fun and if you move in, please do come and say hello.

Renting a home in SecondLife (Part 7)

Rental 1

I’ve found a fantastic little apartment ! Actually like it SO much that PD paid for a few more weeks rental. This comes from Paedra Estates who have a huge selection of homes to choose from. Something to suit all budgets, this home is 270L per week and comes furnished with an additional 150 prims for your own personal use. Interesting concept is, all the furnishings are left so that group members can move them around in edit mode, or request them to be moved (no additional prims can be gleaned by this but you can buy more if you wish).

Rental 2

Have to say the furnishings are sooper lovely and almost all of them are by Bazar – one of my fav furnishing stores. Menus for colour change, superb poses and such great looking items. The rules are simple really, don’t go over your prim allowance, no temp prim rezzers, and be nice – that’s it really !

Rental home 5

At the main office (landmark below) you choose which home you’re interested in, slap the board and it takes you to another office where you need to find a green teleporter. Green means there is a vacancy. A few of the larger homes were fully taken but the apartments seemed to have a few of each available. Once you’ve found an empty home, teleport up and pay the rent box . A group invite then arrives straight away – SL was playing up with mine and I had to relog to get the group to show.

Rental 4

At 270L per week this is a real bargain, so classy with everything you could possibly need – although there are other cheaper homes to see also. The only thing I’ve added is a fireplace. The bed is also by Bazar, wow its amazing, SO amazing I went and bought one ! Actually furnished rental homes are a great way to advertise for furniture makers – people were always asking me where I bought things from when I did rental homes – so they could buy them. Obviously works as I spent a pile of dosh at Bazar this week !

Rental 3

Love the dining area, options for wood and different food items, this landlord has a real eye for design and making a home look special. Must mention that there is a very good security system installed that you can add and people too – so effective I banned Zan *wink* – Ive not had any problems with lag and happily found that the television worked for me here despite not working for me in my own home for the last year ! Landmark below to the main Paedra Estates office – have fun !

A place of your own (No.2)

60L rental home - beach cabin scene

I’ve decided to keep with this feature, and will try to blog a place every couple of weeks. If any of you find a unique, interesting rental home that you think might be worth blogging about please let me know! Anywayyy After 4 hours of trawling around SL, I eventually ended up at “60L rentals”. Thats exactly what it is, a home for 60L per week, it’s what it says on the tin kinda deal! However, the clever thing is you don’t have to choose one home – oh no – you actually get a choice of seventeen ! I stumped up 60L and got my slice of home-sweet-home, then played around with it for an hour. Above is the beach scene I really liked, cabin with adult bed, rockers, locking doors, and an adult daybed. Soft sounds of ocean waves (which I can’t find a way to turn off!), and swirling water effects all around.

60L rental home - Set up panel

Got tired of that after a while so took a look at the other options from the board above. This board is important if you rent here. Its your security, rent box and multi-scene changer thinger. You are located high up in the sky in your own dome, then you select from the pop up menu what home you’d like to rez – note- when you come back to your home from a period away, just the dome is there, it’s not permanent – no worries though, just select it again from the board. The padlock is your security, I stupidly didn’t bother with the helpful notecard given to me upon renting (duh) and came home to find a couple exploring my home , my own fault. Read the notecard, set it up so only I can enter, everyone else is auto ejected – nice !

60L rental home - mesh apartment

Obviously as there is a  Barnesworth Anubis build in the options I chose that next (fangirl!) Each home has a good bed with adult and PG animations, plus in some cases menu driven couches, daybed and sun loungers. Its worth noting that you do get a small prim allowance of ten prims. Enough for shopping bags and perhaps the odd personal item you might want to keep out from time to time.

60L rental home - mesh apartment scene

Theres such a big choice of home styles, from Gorean camp, xxx urban role play, apartments, forests. At this price point it would also make an ideal place to take blog photos (as Zan uses up SO many prims at home I can never rez my own photo scene bubble!) This is a budget operation but with quality options, if you’re a high maintenance type of renter who needs lots of assistance it might not work for you so well, BUT if you READ THE HELP NOTE CARDS – you would be fine !

60L rental home - teleport panel in office

Upon arrival at the office you’ll find this type of board, no need to choose they are all the same btw. Utilise the teleport button, kindly highlighted in BRIGHT yellow and go up to the dome, pay the rent box et voilà, you’re ready to roll. The group invitation arrives straight away, make sure you grab it and accept or you wont be able to set your home position and rez items. I’ve been in this rental for a couple of days now and apart from neglecting to set up my security properly and having uninvited guests, its been quiet and peaceful. My nearest neighbours seem to be about 600m away, and the sim isn’t remotely laggy. The intan dance system is a nice touch for couples and friends and I have actually enjoyed my “little getaway” place.
