Renting a home in SecondLife – Ritzy !

London Sloane Street rental home

I’ve been after one of these rental homes in Sloane Street, Knightsbridge London for simply ages and finally I found one I liked. It’s all about location right? Zan and I have both checked these homes out before and totally fell in love with them, might be because we are English, but also because they are SUCH good value for money. This home was 399L per week, partially furnished , with 100 prims.

London Sloan Street house rental 399L per week

Most of the furnishings are from one of my favourite stores Bazar, I popped over to the store and picked up a few additional pieces at a very low cost (around 15-40L per item!) All very low prim and simply brilliant as decor around the place. So what do you get for your 399L? Surprisingly a huge three storey house with plenty of room. I’m surprised people don’t use them as house shares really, the layout and space is perfect for it. My little piece of England also had a small grassy back garden with a water view (which is what Id been holding out for) others have a sweet lawn all fenced off. Ground floor comprises of an airy entrance hall, lounge, partitioned dining area leading to a nifty little kitchen and doors to the garden.

As you can see I had my laundry hanging out to dry when I took the photos ! This table is from Bazar and I really need to buy it, it rezzes meals and snacks for up to four people, lovely poses and super low prim.

London Sloane Street Lounge area

Here is the living area all very well-appointed, I added the curtains, not that you need them as anyone looking from outside can’t see inside, they just looked pretttty. I’ve got my bedroom  on the next floor and the third floor I left empty, it’s exactly the same size as my one though. When you rent, you should receive a group invite straight away, if you don’t on the notecard you get after paying there is a website address to lodge any messages, my experience is this is responded to very quickly. The home comes complete with a security orb which is very simple to operate, you can also add partners or friends to the rent box which gives them the ability to open the doors and receive their own group invite. I never did find a central office for the rental homes, I just flew around looking for them. Pretty easy to determine which are for rent, plus you get to look at the location in more detail. Despite being quite a busy place, I experienced no lag yay!

Disclaimer: I pay the rent on the homes I blog about. The landlord is not aware I will be blogging about my stay. I have no connection to any rental companies that I write about past or present.

Renting a Home in Secondlife (Part 5)

Aabye 37L per week rental home 1

I was really beginning to give up hope of finding a home to review. I’ve been dumped in forests, under buildings and left in the middle of a sim with nothing to tell me where to go see a home. *le sigh*. On my 50th teleport I finally found something ! This is Aabye rentals, and amazingly this sky home is just 37 L per week (paid monthly) Its got a lot going for it to be honest, and I’m not a big fan of these “boxy” style places, but even I warmed to it. Its spacious and almost everrrrrything in it is texture change. Youre not lumbered with what you’re given, love that. I fiddled about a bit, changed the wall colour and pattern, the lounge set is all colour & pattern change too, even the bed has a lot of choice of linen shades! The kitchen is a little out of proportion – unless you’re Amazonian woman – but its great fun, you can alter the wood of it and the counter tops, plus its got animations for cooking, baking, washing up, the fridge even hands out food & drinks. If you touch the window you get a choice of scenes to look out upon – nice touch. The rules are simple – you get a zero prim allowance, so you cant rez anything out permanently, but you can place shopping to open and then remove it. My group invite arrived within seconds, which was lovely. It would make a great base or romantic hideaway – the bed has a REALLY FULL menu *wink*, there’s also a dance system. Brilliant value all round.

Slink Physique & 37L per week rental home

Had to get a vanity shot in, the new corset that Player bought me from Blacklace awwww and also my newwww mesh Slink Physique body ! I’ve been playing around with this allll morning and I LOVE it ! Such a great price too, at 1250L it’s so affordable. Go grab a demo and try it out, worth a look. My hair is from Damsel Fly, a store Id not been to for such a long time – they sorta seemed to get stuck in a groove of what Id call more middle-aged female styles? Anyway, they’ve moved on and got into mesh, I popped over on the day of the 100L sale and snapped up a few do’s, very very pretty and modern yay!

Boathouse blues (Renting a home in Second Life part 3)

Boat House Rental Skadi

Ahh yes, I am still on my bleu phase ! I even managed to find a house that’s blue – heaven ! Big thanks to a SLU forum member who poked me towards this rental company – I found SO many homes I liked it was hard to decide upon which one to rent and play around with. The rental company is called  “ffrendz” and have a few sites – the Sim I rented on is called Skadi. At the moment its all hands on deck as they are totally revamping their rentals – new homes – new layout. When I found a home I liked, it wasn’t quite ready – so I dropped a notecard on the lovely owner Basilicum Beerbaum and asked if it could be reserved for me, so I could pay the rent when it was ready. No problem ! The very next day, I was ready to roll. Received a note from the landlord with all the information I could need and dashed over to claim my retreat.

Boat House Rental Skadi - front views

The rent is incredibly affordable, I was surprised. I was going to rent one of the little funky beach cabins but decided to go large and splash out on a larger home on the oceans edge. This larger spacious home cost me the grand total of $386L per week – what a steal ! I also get 250 prims, so plenty to decorate the home, rez up a boat as it has access to the sea to sail. As you can see outside you have a long deck area, perfect for entertaining, fishing from and lounging about. (I have a little confession *gasp*, I usually rent for a week, enough time to get a feel for the area and take some snaps – but yesterday I put another week on the box as I LOVE this place that much.) Player came over last night – got his seal of approval too. I haven’t been bothered by a soul but I see people on the sim regularly. I’ve sailed for hours, fiddled about inside and just sat enjoying the view. The landlord is friendly but not in your face – I was given all the information I needed upon renting, a warm welcome also. The rent box contains a prim counter – so you can easily keep a tally of how much you’ve used.

Boat House Rental Skadi - side window views

The home I chose to rent is fabulous. Underneath you have your very own boat house, a place to store your yacht or speed boat. I have really enjoyed sitting on the deck and watching people sail by. Upstairs are the living quarters, this is a view from one of the side windows. as you can see, you’re not hemmed in by other houses and it gives the feeling of wide-open-spaces. I noticed that none of the homes I looked at had a locking system for the doors, so I asked about it. You can, if you want, use a security system of your own. I bought mine from Phil Deakins at Prim Misers. I think they are around 150L a pop, easy to use, simple to set up . (I’ve used these for six years, brilliant little thing) To be honest though, I’ve not even bothered closing my doors – its a nice neighbourhood and you get the feeling that there’s no need to lock up and safeguard.

Boat House Rental Skadi - interior main living spacve - Boathouse sofa, rug & coffee table

The main living area is vast, plenty of room for a sofa, desk or even split it into a bedroom studio kinda deal. French windows fold back to reveal a large balcony area that’s ideal for dining or sipping your morning coffee from. There is also a smaller room off the lounge, great for a nursery or office space, perhaps a small kitchen.

In one corner I placed my brand spanking new desk set from StandyBy Inc, currently available at collabor88. It really fitted in with my nautical home !

Decor detail

I also splurged a little at Sways and bought this darling little photo frame in the shape of a birdcage, you can add your own happy-snaps !

Boat House Sofa - coffee table & rug

My superb sofa is from BoatHouse, I hadn’t been to this shop for simply agesss and I thought they might have something sweet for my new home. I was right ! Snapped up this couch and fishy shaped coffee table plus a rag rug for the floor. The animations in the couch are sooo lovely ! Singles & couples and naughty ones too o.O ! More from the Boathouse later I promise – I bought a LOTS .

FYI. Ffrendz rental community is undergoing a revamp currently, they will have rental offices set up at each location eventually apparently, which will make it easier to navigate around all the areas. There is also a web site which is under construction for the time being and may not be totally up to date, this is the web address : www.ffrendz.eu    .  Contacts

A home of your own (renting in SL)

Boathouse rental home

For six years I was a landlord in SecondLife, in fact I think I only ever rented homes/land for myself for about 3 months, then bought land and the rest is my SL history. Renting your own place is a big draw for a lot of people, a place to log into, a place to decorate, to hang out in with friends or lovers. Home rentals is a big market in Second Life, and the choices almost limitless! It can seem a bit overwhelming though , for new residents – they are encouraged to go “premium” by Linden Lab to own a home. However, you don’t need to go premium at all to get a space of your own. There are plenty of landlords in Second Life that offer all sorts of places for you to settle right into. I sent a trusted friend off with a small amount of cash, with instructions to rent a place and decorate it as cheaply and prettily as possible. I was pretty amazed actually that she found this gorgeous houseboat on day one. Its set in a realistic marina, with open access to the sea and a dock for your own boat. All for the tiny rent of 200L per week with 150 prims tossed in ! If you utilise the classifieds search function and type in something like “rental home”, a list as long as your arm will pop up for you to ponder. If you want more privacy than a land based home offers, check out the “sky homes”. Teleport over and take a peek at the homes, you’ll be able to go inside and inspect before paying rent. It’s important to also be a “good tenant” – this means paying your rent on time (the rent box should be outside the property and will probably also show you how much time you have left). If you’re unsure how many prims you have out, ASK your landlord to check for you – it’s a simple thing for them to do, they might even have a prim counter inside your home or on your rent box – so ask them ! You should be offered a group to join – this is IMPORTANT – if you’re not in the rental group you wont be able to rez any of your objects or set your space as your “home location” – so make sure you’ve got it ! If the invite didn’t come through, ask your landlord for it again.

Boathouse decor 2 Loks mesh trolley coffee table 1 prim !- Cleo Design vase with flowers, persnikety drainer, Cleo design tray & divider - Free 1 prim cupcake

Back to the houseboat, its pretty spacious and sooper adorable. I was gobsmacked at the decor that had been found. A lot from gacha yardsales, which are a really handy source of low cost items for your home. As each new round of gacha events ends, the prices do seem to drop (unless it’s a rare item). Some items were from the market place and are mostly dollarbies. (all info below) Above is a selection of items – drainer from persnickety 25L – Tray table from Cleo Designs 20l – 1 prim cupcake that gives out wearable cakes is free – Paris screen behind is one prim and only 50L , I especially liked the mesh “Barbary Coast Freight Cart Coffee Table” that she found at Lok’s – 1 prim  and SO stylish for 49L only ! The sweet votive was from Grimalkin and a gacha item for just 25L – the vase of lilacs another bargain from Cleo Designs at 40L .

Boathouse decor 3 WS Bench dollarbie ! - decor flowers

One of my favourite finds she made was this dollarbie bench by *WS* on the market place, 5 prims with couples and singles animations, you get two versions, white or dark wood.

BoatHouse decor items - Kusshon breakfast bar

Biggest purchase was at Kusshon, but it really seems to steal the show inside the boathouse’s living space. The “coffee hour” set is a winner if your short on space , touch controlled for three wood colours, coffee machine built right in and two scrummy stools with male & female poses. You also get a couple of decor items to scatter around included. Low Li and at 240L, it really wont break the bank. All the other decorative bits n bobs were gacha yard sale purchases from 10L – 25L, seriously you need to get yardsaling ! Ohhh almost forgot – the retro telephone is from The Mustard Seed, its 30L and one prim – great buy.

boathouse upper deck - Tidbits table and chairs set dollarbie !

This fantastico patio set was a market place treat by Tidbits, a dollarbie ! Lovely poses and the whole set comes in at 11 Li.

FREE Bunny hutch with static bunnies ! Animated bunny 30L !

There was this adorable group gift from Dench Designs too, a bunny hutch ! Its got bunnies inside  (static) The bunny outside the pen is animated, for 30L you too can have your own hoppy skippy  bunneh. Group is free to join btw. The upper deck of the boathouse seems to be a perfect place for it, always makes a place more homely with pets . I think the hutch is 6Li, but you’d have to check to be sure !

Dench Designs Dog with sounds 30L and bowls 15L each ! Super low prim yay!

Speaking of pets, check out this gorgeous Bassett Hound doggy ! He is only 1 prim ! He has a sound menu, meaning he woofs and sniffs, you can alter the amount of noises and volume handy ! A real bargain at only 30L, the food & water bowls are 15L each. No laggy scripts involved, your landlord will adore you *wink*, he can be found at Dench Designs, lurking outside in the garden area.

Pro – tips for renting a home from a private landlord:

1) Pay for one week at a time – you stand to lose little if you decide it’s not what you want, or you don’t like the neighbours!

2) Check the prim allowance and stick to it. Ask about a prim counter, if you need extra prims ASK before using them and see what it will cost.

3) If you like more privacy check out sky homes.

4) If you own pets/babies etc, make sure they are permitted in your home. Some landlords have rules regarding leaving them animated while you’re not there – as they can cause lag and spoil the experience for other residents.

5) If you would like a television or media set up – talk to your landlord about “deeding” and permissions.

The Boathouse rental: Emmons-Key Marina – both Player and I have been to take a look around and I have to say – we LOVED it! Plenty of space, incredibly inexpensive to rent and a shedload of prims included. The access to water to sail on is a BIG bonus.

Gacha yardsale list at Seraphim – Look at the tabs at the top of the homepage and choose “yardsales” – literally ooodles of them to choose from, some only cover The Arcade, but plenty cover ALL gacha events. Great pickings for cheap cheap cheap decor items for your space !
